Sangamon Animal Control reports feline panleukopenia

Shelter asks public to pause stray-cat drop-offs; foster homes sought for healthy cats.

Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center said feline panleukopenia — a highly contagious, potentially life-threatening cat virus — has been identified in the shelter. The virus hits kittens and unvaccinated cats hardest and can spread via litter boxes, bedding, bowls, clothing, and hands.

The shelter asks the public to avoid bringing stray cats in unless absolutely necessary, and to call 217-535-3065 first about healthy-looking strays. Temporary fosters for healthy cats can reduce crowding.
