Mayoral hopefuls court influencers as disclosure rules lag

Johnson’s campaign says it has paid four creators; Mendoza and Giannoulias are also building creator outreach.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, Susana Mendoza and Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias are all courting social-media creators ahead of the Feb. 23 municipal election, Block Club Chicago reports. Johnson’s campaign says it has paid four creators and requires them to use a partner hashtag. Mendoza’s and Giannoulias’ campaigns say they have not paid any.

Illinois election law does not mention influencers specifically. Ald. Matt Martin (47th) has proposed a “paid for by” disclosure rule for sponsored political posts, but it was sent to the Rules Committee.
