Decatur council hears Oasis Day Center concerns, trims Millikin bonds

Residents say homeless neighbors have lost showers, laundry and mail since Heritage paused the center; no reopening date is set.

Residents told the Decatur City Council on Monday evening about the impact of Heritage Behavioral Health Center’s suspension of services at the Oasis Day Center, which helped homeless residents with basic needs and referrals, WAND reports. One speaker said people had gone more than a week without showers, laundry, mail and a safe place to spend the day.

Heritage CEO Mary Garrison thanked partner agencies that are helping fill the gap and said there is no potential reopening date. The council also cut a bond agreement for Millikin University’s renovation project from the $53 million approved in March to $18 million; Millikin President Dean Pribbenow said the city’s bond issuance won’t cost taxpayers.
