Champaign schools open doors ahead of November referendum

District officials showed corroding steam pipes and makeshift classrooms at International Prep Academy.

The Champaign school district is opening its buildings to the public ahead of a November referendum, WCIA reports. At International Prep Academy, the principal showed a former gym being used for instruction and corroding steam pipes in the crawlspace that staff have to patch.

Board member Amy Armstrong said that if the measure fails, the district would struggle to fit more than 240 students back into middle schools that are already overcrowded.
