Animal Protective League eyes a temporary home four months after tornado

The June 10 EF1 storm did about $1.2M in damage on Taintor Road; the APL hopes for temporary buildings or a new site within 3–6 months.

Springfield’s Animal Protective League hopes to put up temporary buildings at its Taintor Road headquarters across from the State Fairgrounds — or move to a temporary location — in the next three to six months, Illinois Times reports. The June 10 EF1 tornado destroyed its shelter and spay/neuter clinic buildings, causing an estimated $1.2 million in damage; staff and volunteers got all of the roughly 155 animals out without serious injury.

Executive director Deana Corbin said insurance hurdles have delayed demolition, which she hopes to schedule within a couple of weeks, the SJ-R reports. None of the 42 employees has been laid off, adoptions continue, the clinic is working out of the county Animal Control Center, and a multimillion-dollar capital campaign will be needed for a full rebuild. The county shelter, which doesn’t turn away strays, says it has been overwhelmed since the APL shelter closed — including a box of eight puppies found dumped on Mason Street on Oct. 5.
